Eighteen Weapons of Chinese Martial Arts——Spear
Spear developed from lance, an ancient weapon. It is long and sharp, highly lethal, convenient to utilize, tricky and unique, and known as the “king of all weapons”. Spears have various types and different functions and were widely used by infantries and cavalries.
A spear consists of the spear tip, spear tassel and spear stem. The spear tip is made of bronze and iron with sharp head, high ridge and thin blade. The spear tassel is the decoration under the spearhead and was usually made from horsehair or cow tail in ancient times. Now it is often made from thin hemp thread. Shaking the spear tassel can obfuscate the enemy’s eyesight during fighting and enhance practitioners’ enthusiasm in daily trainings. The spear stem was often made of wood in ancient times, which was very straight. Spears have different types, including long spear, short spear, or single spear and double spear.
There are various spear techniques, but all are featured with flexible and agile moves. While practicing spear, the spear user should have flexible and changeful body movements and light and agile footwork, which usually add elegance to the spear user him/herself. Spear techniques can be practiced by oneself or counter practiced with other weapons, such as broadsword vs. spear, sword vs. spear, etc.
